Dominique Strauss-Kahn Denied Bail

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn,
head of the International
Monetary Fund will spend
the next few days in an
11-by-13-foot cell at New
York's Rikers Island jail.

Strauss-Kahn allegedly chased,
in the nude, a housekeeping
employee down a hallway and
sexually assaulted her.

Strauss-Kahn, a man who has
helped bail-out desperate
countries in need of cash,
was denied bail in a New
York courtroom on Monday.

When the day ended, the
62-year-old was in the
East River compound, a
New York Department of
Corrections spokesman
who declined to be named.

Strauss-Kahn's next court
appearance is scheduled
for Friday.

Until then, he'll have no
contact with other inmates
because he is considered
a high-profile detainee,
spokesman.

His arrest shook the
financial world, due to his
leadership with multi-
billion-dollar loans and
financial policy that
regularly affect people
by the tens of millions.

Strauss-Kahn's situation
shocked France, where he
had been not only a leading
contender to be the Socialist
party's presidential nominee
but a favorite to unseat
incumbent President Nikolas
Sarkozy.

France's Next Possible President Jailed on Rape Allegations

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

The New York arrest of one
of France's leading global
figures and next possible
president, Dominique
Strauss-Kahn, 62, on charges
of attempted rape threw
France in shock, outrage,
disbelief and embarrassment
on Sunday.

The allegations were that
Socialist and managing director
of the International Monetary
Fund, attempted to rape a maid.
It happened in a $3,000 a night
suite, New York hotel.

The presumption of innocence
must be maintained and the courts
must be allowed to do their work,
government of President Nicolas
Sarkozy.

Strauss-Kahn's wife, the American
born French television journalist
Anne Sinclair, expressed disbelief
in the charges and faith in her
husband's innocence.

"If the accusations turn out to be
true and even if they are proved
false, this is a degrading thing,"
François Bayrou, a centrist who ran
for the presidency in 2007.

The I.M.F. appointed an acting
managing director on Sunday to replace
Strauss-Kahn, who spent hours in a
Manhattan jail awaiting arraignment,
which was postponed until Monday after
additional evidence was sought
including DNA samples from his fingernails
and skin.

Stop American Aid To Pakistan- Congressman Dana Rohrabacher

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher,
R-Costa Mesa, introduced
legislation in the House of
Representatives to stop
American aid to Pakistan,
explained the killing of
Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad
made it clear that Islamabad
concealed, protected and was
an enabler for bin Laden.

"We can no longer afford this
foolishness," Rohrabacher said.
"The time has come for us to
stop subsidizing those who
actively oppose us. Pakistan
has shown itself not to be
America's ally."

Pakistan has received over
$18 billion in United States
aid since 2001 per Rohrabacher.

The bill points-out that
terrorists based in Pakistan,
specifically Lashkar-e-Taiba
(LeT), were held responsible
for terrorist strikes inside
India including the Mumbai
terrorist attack in November
2008, in which 166 people
including six American
nationals were killed.

The bill outlines several
accounts of Pakistan's
behavior toward the United
States in recent reports of
Pakistani leadership lobbying
Afghan President Hamid Karzai
to move away from "imperial"
America and to embrace
Communist China, according
to a statement issued by the
Congressman.

There's growing concern about
aid the United States gives to
Pakistan.

Lawsuit Over 'Elly May Barbie'

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

The actress, Donna Douglas,
who played Elly May Clampett,
in the hit 1960s television
series "The Beverly Hillbillies,"
is suing Mattel over its "Elly
May Barbie" doll.

The company "licensed the rights
to 'Beverly Hillbillies' for this
product through the appropriate
channels, "Mattel's spokesman.

Donna Douglas' federal lawsuit,
filed in Louisiana, claims the
toy-maker is "engaging in the
unauthorized use of her name,
likeness, image and attributes"
as Elly May.

Douglas never gave Mattel
permission to market the doll or
use her endorsement to promote
it per court papers.

The suit states that a photo of
Douglas in character as Elly May
is used in the packaging, and
Mattel makes claims in its
promotional material that the doll
"captures the essence of the
classic '60s TV character and show."

"The Beverly Hillbillies," starring
Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Max Baer
Jr. and Douglas, ran on CBS for nine
years, from 1962 through 1971, and
was popular.

The show was about a rural Southern
family that moves to the glitz of
Beverly Hills.

Teacher's Naked Walk Due to Third Eye

Ask me a question, or leave me
a comment.

A teacher, Harlan Porter-31,
took his clothes off and walked
naked around a Georgia elementary
school. Porter explained to police
that his behavior helped him
achieve a "new level of
enlightenment" and "wanted everybody
to be free now that his third eye
was open," per a police report.

Porter received for showing his
third eye, last Friday afternoon
at the B.C. Haynie Elementary School,
a booking into the Clayton County
Jail on a misdemeanor charge and
released after posting $2000 bond.

Porter had "several books in his
belongings that appeared to be on
topics such as spirituality and
transcendental meditation," Police
reported.

Fellow teachers stated that Porter
"did not drink sodas or other canned
beverages, maintained a strict vegan
diet" and was not known to take drugs
or drink alcohol. "However, on the
date in question, they noticed that
he was drinking a coke and had gone
to taco bell to get tacos for lunch,"
reported Officer Khari Reed.

Porter's April 22 walk, about 3:20 PM,
wasn't seen by any students who had
been dismissed and he avoided more
serious charges.

The teacher "had recently learned that
his employment contract would not be
renewed," Officer Reed. Also, that
Porter had previously been "diagnosed
schizophrenic," though the school's
principal told cops the educator had
never exhibited "strange behavior."

Bin Laden Taken Down In Less Than Forty Minutes

Ask me a question, or leave me
a comment.

Osama Bin Laden, terrorist and
architect of the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks, was killed in a fire-
fight with elite American forces
Monday, then quickly buried at
sea.

"His death does not mark the end
of our effort. There's no doubt
that al-Qaida will continue to
pursue attacks against us. We must
and we will remain vigilant,"
President Barack Obama.

United States helicopters transported
elite counter-terrorism troops into
the compound identified by the CIA
as Bin Laden's hide-out. They took
less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden was
shot in the head, officials
explained, after he and his bodyguards
resisted.

The United States official who shared
the burial at sea said it would have
been difficult to find a country
willing to accept the remains.

The remains had been handled in
accordance with Islamic custom, which
requires speedy burial, President Obama.

"I heard a thundering sound, followed
by heavy firing. Then firing suddenly
stopped. Then more thundering, then a
big blast," Mohammad Haroon Rasheed, a
resident of Abbottobad, Pakistan, after
the choppers had swooped in and then
were gone.

The State Department put United States
embassies on alert and warned of the
heightened possibility for anti-American
violence. In a worldwide travel alert,
the department stated there was an
"enhanced potential for anti-American
violence given recent counter-terrorism
activity in Pakistan."

Titanic's Fair Haired Unknown Child

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

The crew of the rescue ship
Mackay-Bennett recovered
the body of a fair haired,
about 2-year-old boy out of
the Atlantic Ocean on April
21, 1912.

The body as well as many others
were taken to a cemetery in
Halifax, Nova Scotia, where
the crew of the Mackay-Bennett
placed a headstone dedicated to
the "unknown child" over his grave.

Researchers feel that they have
solved the mystery of the unknown
child, in that he was 19-month-old
Sidney Leslie Goodwin from England.

The fair haired unknown child was
identified two times before, but
researchers believe now he was
Goodwin.

The quest to identify the child
began over a decade ago, when Ryan
Parr, adjunct professor at Lakehead
University, Ontario, worked with
DNA taken from ancient human
remains viewed videos about the
Titanic.

"I thought 'Wow, I wonder if anyone
is interested or still cares about
the unidentified victims of the
Titanic,'" Parr.

Parr received permission to exhume
the remains.

A 2.4-inch long fragment of an arm
bone and three teeth remained of
the unknown child.

An expert analysis of the child's
teeth concluded the unknown child
to be between 9 and 15 months. Doubts
surrounded the conclusions until a pair
of shoes recovered from the unknown
child and held in the Maritime Museum
of the Atlantic caused the researchers
to question the identification.

Parr tried the identification process
again with the help of the U.S. Armed
Forces DNA Identification Laboratory.

They looked at another, less mutation
prone section of the mitochondrial DNA,
where they found a single difference
that indicated that Goodwin might
actually be the unknown child. The
Armed Forces lab confirmed this when
they found a second, single, difference
in another section of the DNA.

"Luckily, it was a rare difference, so
that is what gives you 98 percent
certainty the identification is correct,"
Parr explained.

Lohan angered by jail sentence

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

Lindsay Lohan, 24, was “blindsided”
after being sentenced to jail,
while many speculated that if her
charges were reduced from felony
theft to misdemeanor charges, she'd
be able to escape any time behind
bars.

TMZ reports that didn't happen, and
she was slammed with three months of
hard time, plus 480 hours of community
service.

Lohan was in custody about five hours
after her hearing. She then posted bail
and is expected to appeal the judge’s
decision on jail time.

It all started on January 22 when she
allegedly left Kamofie & Company, a
Venice, California jewelry store, with
a $2,500 necklace. Lohan was caught on
surveillance tape trying on the necklace
and departing the store with a group of
friends

She is “angry” about how things ended up
“because she has been working so hard on
turning her life around -- She didn’t do
what they said she did. She didn’t steal
that necklace,” said producer Nathan
Folks, a friend of Lohan.

Lohan made a statement on Twitter:

“With my family and thinking of my
grandfather whos birthday was yesterday
and unfortunately passed away a few years
ago… i am just grateful for the life i have,
i cannot explain how excited i am to begin
working on films again, on top of that- i
better get one of my two favorite scripts
that i am in love with. my friends know
what they both are….. all my love- LL god
bless and g’night :)”

Lohan asserts that she's not guilty of the
felony grand theft charges

Negative Criticism

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

Judgments Are Made In Life

Negative criticism, judgment,
is a part of life as is living.
People, wrong or right, make
judgments. Some people live to
hand-out negative criticism.

Why? They care little for you
or your work. The small-minded
look at you, your writing,
under a microscope to poke
around for errors. An I without
the dot will do. They live to
belittle and make themselves
appear right, intelligent.

Some people through their jobs
have an obligation to criticize,
positive and/or negative. Still,
criticism should be handled
humanely.

I critique manuscripts, and know
from experience. I look at a
writer's work with an objective
eye but with the understanding
that a feeling/caring person
wrote it.

Errors can be pointed-out without
crushing a writer's ambition. Tips
are given to improve, make better.

A few forget what it's like on the
writing side, can't grasp it or
don't care.

However, don't let negative criticism
stop you. Negative criticism is
peppered throughout life.

Handle it by accepting that you're
not perfect. Go through your writing
and make it better. Work on areas
of weakness. Your work have tons
of spelling errors? Spell-check
five times, six to be sure. Verbs
a problem? Take time to learn about
strong verbs.

You can't stop people from throwing
negative criticism your way, but you
can strengthen areas that need work.
A suggestion is to select two hours,
day or night, for improving self or
writing.

NewsBlaze Loses a Wonderful Friend, Chic Hollis

Ask me a question, or leave me
a comment.

Our friend Chic Hollis died
unexpectedly on January 12,
a very sad loss for his
lovely wife Gisela and family,
and just as sad for Chic's
NewsBlaze family.

We are missing him very much,
but his musings will live on
in NewsBlaze forever.

The Internet is an amazing
phenomenon that brings people
together in unexpected ways.

In April 2010, it was our good
fortune to have Chic Hollis find
NewsBlaze. We had published one
of his "musings" and he wrote to
us about the possibility of
contributing more.

Newsblaze editor, Judyth Piazza
had this to say about Chic, "I
first met Chic as an editor for
Newsblaze.com but as we got to
know one another better, we
traded stories about each other's
lives and future plans and it became
very clear that in many ways I was
following a trail that Chic had
already blazed for me. Whether it be
secret Air Force bases in Turkey or
desert adventures in faraway lands,
Chic and I were kindred spirits in
different times being guided by the
same light.

"I am devastated to hear about Chic's
death. Chic had been helping me as of
late with achieving some of my most
important goals and dreams. Chic had
became way more than a friend to me,
he was a mentor and a father figure.
Chic was that beacon of light that
kept me honest in the dirty world
of journalism.

We chatted every morning for months
on Yahoo Messenger....I miss him sooo
much. He gave me the motivation I
needed to tackle my day and the best
business advice that I have ever
received. I encouraged him to continue
writing because it inspired me and
many others. I am so very sad....I
just can't believe it.

Recently, there has been talk that
the Internet causes a disconnect in
society. For me, this is not true.
The Internet has helped me develop
friendships and forge bonds that
will last a lifetime. Even though
I never got the chance to meet Chic
in person, his words I will never
forget."

When we asked Chic for some information
for a bio, he sent a short letter that
told us a lot about him, and we can't
think of a better way to end this story
than to read about Chic, in his own words.

"I have been a drummer for 70 years
and a motorcyclist for 64. I was principal
drummer with the University of Michigan
Bands for three years and student business
manager of the bands for two.

When I was a member of the U of M Bands,
the Symphony Band played in Carnegie Hall
in NYC, Boston's Symphony Hall, and
Philadelphia's Academy of Music. I won
the General Electric Scholarship granted
by the School of Business Administration
for being first in my class. I later
played drums for amateur Broadway shows
in Argentina and Brazil.

Upon graduation I served two years as an
officer in the Air Force in North Africa
as Chief of Officer Personnel in the 17
Air Force Hqs. The Hqs. were first located
in Morocco and then in Libya. I have
worked for General Electric, Chrysler,
Volkswagen, and Bendix (now Honeywell.)
My assignments for Chrysler included
Director of Finance in Venezuela, in
Argentina, in Brazil, Deputy Managing
Director in Spain, and Managing Director
in Argentina. When Chrysler's Argentine
subsidiary was sold to Volkswagen, I was
offered and accepted a 3 year contract to
be head of Volkswagen Argentina. I lived
overseas 16 years and supervised foreign
subsidiaries another 6.

I returned to the US in 1983 and became
Group Vice President for Latin America
of Bendix Automotive responsible for
factories located in Mexico, Brazil,
and Argentina. I retired from Bendix
in 1988 and in 1992 became COO of a
California retail property management
company which managed 38 shopping
centers and malls in California.

I have been married 4 times and have
5 children born in 5 different
countries on four continents. I
consider myself a politically
independent citizen of the world
interested in helping Americans
understand the reality that is
life overseas where many intelligent,
educated, and industrious people
aren't as privileged as we are in
the US.

I've studied Latin and Greek in high
school, Russian at Michigan, and
French, Spanish, Portuguese, and
German during my working assignments.

Attached is a musing I recently wrote
which gives you some idea of my
current thinking. Since I am not
familiar with your editorial
philosophy, my writings may not be
what you are looking for today.
Nevertheless, I feel honored that
you have already published one of
my musings."

We miss you, Chic Hollis.

Chic's first published musing at
Newsblaze, "What is a 'Death Council?'
How Does It Function?"

Needless to say, we loved everything
Chic wrote. We were honored that he
shared his time, thoughts, energy and
wisdom with us, and we all miss him
very much. Thankfully, we have all his
musings and his photo to remember him.

Congress Didn't Agree on a Budget

Ask me a question, or leave
me a comment.

The House and Senate didn't
agreed on a budget, and that
could shut down the federal
government as early as next
week.

The main issue is surrounding
proposed spending cuts that
include budget cuts for New
York.

A plan the House passed Friday
cuts $61 billion and calls for
huge cuts to education funding
for New York: $36 million in
special education funds, $466
million in college Pell grants,
$30 million in aid to schools in
low-income neighborhoods and
12,000 slots in pre-school Head
Start programs.

Congress didn't agree on a budget
for this year and instead relied
on the continuing resolutions to
keep money flowing.

The $61 billion cut House Speaker
John Boehner pushed through last
week would lead to a budget that's
about $100 billion less than
President Obama asked for.

Democrats in the Senate are looking
at a temporary resolution to keep
running for a few weeks beyond March
4, buying them time to cut a deal
with the GOP. It's unclear whether
they'll get it.
